Well hello there......it's been awhile

So if you are still with me here, you will see that I have not been posting lately. Hey life gets in the way. this has been a spring and summer of pure craziness and none of it fun!

It's now the Jewish New Year. A time to reevaluate and renew life. Actually my favorite time of year! So this evening as I was sitting making lists of all the things I wanted to do/learn/read/knit/craft....... I took a look at revamping the blog. A little Fall renewal and cleaning up, like putting a coat of paint on a wall.

First, I was using this blog to log and keep track of my knitting. Ravelry took it's place. Then I was keeping track of my reading but Goodreads was discovered. I discovered Pinterest and I can log all my crafty bits and bobs and recipes over there. Maybe a new picture for the header and some new colors with get me to write again......... I hope. :)

Snow, Snow and More Snow!

Apparently I have moved to Buffalo and no one has told me. Good Gravy (I cleaned this up because this was NOT my exclaimation when I looked out the window at 6:45 am), you should see the snow! Yes, we are in the middle of yet another mid-week blast and I am not happy. Not that there is anything you can do about it, but this Winter Lover is desperate for Spring.

Today "Mr. Perky Weatherdude" announced that there is more snow on the ground now than there was after the Blizzard of '78! And that was a TON OF SNOW!! Then, he smiled and said he didn't remember the Blizzard at all. Heh. Young Whippersnapper. LOL.

So, it's February first and how are your resolutions coming along?? I will admit, I am doing rather well here. Ok, the one I really need to crack down on is "Eat More Fruit". Yes, I am a vegetarian but not I am not all that fond of fruit. It's more about the savory with me. Give me a big salad or a big bowl of steamed veg any day!! I did buy the fruit, now I just need to eat it.

Tomorrow I hope to post all my jewelry and knitting pictures. My camera card is full and I will show you what I have been up to, besides reading......and shoveling snow.

And because we need just a touch of something bright and sunny......

I saw this pattern book and had to get it. I have always wanted to try something in modular crochet. It is much easier than it looks for those of you who don't crochet. The pattern was not really written all that clearly but after a few rip outs (and a little help from Ravelry), I got it done. I see many more of these in my future!

I took this picture of my "cotton" stash (just the Sugar n' Cream brand, BTW) for my friend Jena. I think I have an addiction to it. Especially since it is ON SALE this week at Michaels for ONE DOLLAR A SKEIN. You just know I had to go buy some more. :)

So that being said..... I have a NEW resolution for 2011. 52 dishcloths in 52 weeks.

Hey, they make great gifts and who doesn't need dishcloths in the kitchen.

Books, books, books!

Well, I am just overjoyed at the fact there is MORE snow in the forecast! YIPPEE....NOT. But that is not until Friday. One nice thing about a nice snowy day is the chance to stay in and read. I declared my New Year resolution to read more this year in the previous post. So far, so good. I have read FOUR books and am on my fifth. And out of that, only ONE was not so hot. Not bad enough to make me put it back on the library shelf, but I would not pick up any others in the series. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

But besides keeping track of my reading here for 2011, I joined Good Reads. This is a great site for all of you who read, and read alot. I figured instead of doing my reviews all over the place, this was the way to go. All of my books in one central location. Perfect. I put the link in the side bar ---> to the right. Follow my progress or join and "friend me" so I can see what you read too! Hopefully, this will be just like ravelry as a great aide for recommendations and keeping track of things!

My favorite book to date was "The Case of the Missing Servant" by Tarquin Hall. This new series is very reminiscent of the Mme. Ramotswe series by Alexander McCall Smith. The characters are charming and it was a very well crafted story giving you insight into modern life in India. The only bad thing about it (and it really is not all that bad) is that it makes you hungry for samosas and chana dal! I headed off to Trader Joe's for some! I even stopped at the library and picked up the second book in the series. So far, Mr. hall has only written two and I am sure I will be eagerly awaiting the next installment!

OK, I have spent enough time on the computer now. Off to get caught up on housework!

Tardy for the Party!

So here it is, January 16th and I have not had one single post in the New Year. That's one New Year resolution shot to hell. But hey, I gave myself quite a few this year and in my defense, I have had an excuse (or excuses). We have had TWO, count 'em, TWO blizzards. Ok I need to devote a post to this later. AND I have had numerous heater/oil burner issues and power outages. FUN. FUN. OH SO FUN. Then, there was the flu. Yeah. If one more person asks me if they are sure I had the flu, I think I will smack them silly.

But despite that, I have started on making 2011 a very productive year. I have made some knitted items. And that includes FINISHING and putting them in the mail to their respective destinations!!! Pictures to post later, I promise. One of the goals is to get all my projects, past and future, logged in on Ravelry.

And I have read approximately 3.5 books!!! I decided that I watch way too much trash tv and I don't read like I used to. As a child, I was a voracious reader and I love to read so in 2011, I am devoted more time to that love.

And starting this week, I am going to write more both her in the more "public forum" and in private. And see if I can get more people to read this dang blog. I might even begin to enjoy blogging again.

Well, I can't believe it has been almost a month since I last blogged. I guess I was busier than I thought with the holidays, snow storms and BLIZZARDS, and adjusting to having a cat in the house. Seriously we all love her, but the early morning wake up calls have to stop!!! We made it thorough the big blizzard of 2010 relatively unscathed aside from the loss of cable and internet for a day! It was a good time to rediscover my DVD collection.

Any New Year resolutions? Any exciting plans to ring in 2011?

Sorry it has been awhile since I posted. I managed to come down with a nasty bug. Yah, that one, the one that is going around like wildfire. I managed to recover enough to go with my friend (and her delightful daughter) to the Boston Vegetarian Food Festival over the weekend. YAY!

It was loads of fun. Sure, I could do without the few (and there were very few) tables of animal rights groups and the upsetting pictures, but for the most part there were LOTS of really interesting booths and TONS of samples. YUM!!!! I picked up magazines, bought a Southern Veggie cookbook (greens and grits anyone?), and discovered some new products (and got samples for later). I even got to try hemp milk. OK, while it was not my favorite thing, it wasn't all that bad (in a pinch when I can't find soy milk)

My favorite product was the most DELICIOUS Greek olives. I swear I wanted to distract the exhibitor (Hey look! There goes Elvis!) and make off with the sample bowl and go hide. Yah, they were that good! Unfortunately they are only available via internet (www.lakoniagreekproducts.com). There is a "free shipping" code too - VFE33 (exp. 12/30).

I did buy a can of organic fair trade cocoa powder (it was a bargain) and I see a chocolate cake in my future!!!

If you have never been to a Veggie Fair, I suggest you go. You just may find meatless is not all that bad! I will be definitely be trekking into the city next year for it!

Every year I send my friend (and A #1 pet sitter) a Halloween card. It is the ONLY Halloween card I send. And every year, I manage to find one with a pug on it. I wonder why that is? LOL. And please don't tell me it is because they are ugly or Lucy will be very cross with you. I managed to find the picture that was on the card online so I swiped it. Isn't it funny?

I swiped this from a friend's blog on Tumblr. I thought this was a neat story and wanted to pass it on. So on this busy Monday, let's take a minute to appreciate some unexpected beauty.

Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes, a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:

The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:

A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:

A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes:

The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour:

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.

The questions raised:

*In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?

*Do we stop to appreciate it?

*Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made…How many other things are we missing?

Nail of the Week!

It's been awhile since I posted what is on my nails. I ALWAYS wear polish although I will say that the last few manicures I did were not the best. Maybe I shouldn't polish my nails at night? anyway, there was lots of buzz a few months ago about Orly's new collection called Cosmic FX. I purchased three from an nail polish e-tailer before they raised the price to the current $10.

I posted the blue shade (Halley's Comet) here. It was really pretty but sort of difficult to remove. The little mineral sparkles seems to go all over my hands (like a disco smurf). Would it stop me from wearing it though, no. So today, I put on "It's Not Rocket Science" which is a olive/pea green, which I just love and is so "in" this season. Hmm, just a thought here, how about olive green hand warmer to match this?? I think I will dig through my yarn stash to see if I have some yarn that will fit the bill.

Sunday Is For Swatching

As promised here is a swatch of the lipstick/gloss duo from yesterday. I really love the "berry" toned lipstick. It is not something I normally wear and I have to say it was flattering not only on me, but on my friend as well.

This is MAC Amplified lipstick in "Dark Deed" from the Venomous Villains collection.

Isn't the packaging GREAT??? I love the picture of Maleficent on this tube!!!

The gloss is by Sephora in Gold and Glow. This tube is HUGE and for $10, quite a bargain. I think I will try this over every lipstick I have, I love the effect.

Saturday is for Sightings!

One of my good friends was free over the weekend and the Longhorns had a bye week so no game for me, so we decided to go to the mall, walk around, surf the makeup counters and get some dinner! Oh, we had a ball! We ate some really awesome (read: fattening) food and walked our feet off BUT the best part was we also had a celebrity sighting. (And yes, I forgot my camera.) Who did we see? SNOOKI of Jersey Shore fame!!!

Well not the real person, but this make up chick at the Bobbi Brown counter LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE HER. Seriously, right down to the spray on tan! The hair, the clothes, everything but the long nails!! We ended up trying some of the new Fall colors on. We found the perfect combination for a lovely look only to find out that the lip gloss (which made the entire look) was only available in a gift pack for twice the price and half the size. Which would not have been bad if the other colors were decent. "Snooki" got a little miffed that we did jump at the chance to by the gloss in the gift set!

We leave the store and we look at each other and burst into a fit of laughter and say, did we just get lipstick put on by Snooki??

Oh and I did put together a similar look for less in case you are a makeup fiend! It features a brand new MAC lip stick from the Venomous Villains collection. (Which by the way is amazing in every way) and a gold lip gloss from Sephora. I will swatch it tomorrow on my hand for you to see tomorrow in daylight.

But what really made the day was our "pseudo celebrity" sighting. We laughed more about that than anything else. At the end of the trip we were calling each other Snooki!!!! I think I should invest in a cell phone with a camera or start putting my little digital in my purse from now on! We both decided that this was a blog worthy event even without a picture for proof! LOL.

Color Club Purples

On the recommendation of a friend, I ordered some "Color Club" nail polish with my last order. Yes, I ordered both the OPI and China Glaze Halloween collections. I can't wait to swatch them. The colors are pretty amazing.

Back to Color Club. Well it was cheap enough (less than $3) and the color palette was really nice. I really fell in love with the "Rebel Debutante" collection. So, here are my first two swatches. It went on smooth and I used two coats for each manicure.

This could very well be my "go to" color when you want some color but something more sedated. When bright blue or green nails just won't do. It is much prettier in person.

This one is AMAZING! It is listed as a shimmer but it is really a holographic. In sunlight there is all kinds of silver flashes happening. You can see it a bit in the bottle. I got lots of compliments on this one, even if my manicure was not the best!

A Finished Project!!!!

Whoa! I actually finished a project! I can't believe it! Well, the only reason I finished it is because it is a gift and I am giving it tomorrow at lunch. There was no time for messing about!

I just wished my pictures were better. It has been a dreary day here.

Catching Up

Well it's been awhile..... and I'll catch you up to speed.

I finally finished the "Hunger Games" Trilogy and completely enjoyed it! Great writing and a very inventive story. The last one was, in my opinion, the best. Not a completely surprise ending but a good one. And I was left wanting more. More of her storytelling that is. Now I am on the fourth book of "The Immortal Nicholas Flammel". Again, more good writing and inventive storytelling. This young adult genre definitely has some great books!

Between reading and working in the yard (the hot summer definitely took a toll on my grass), there has been very little knitting to show. There are lots of projects in the basket, but nothing finished. Maybe this weekend, during the football games, I can finish up some stuff. As far as jewelry, again, there was some vintage bead orders placed, but no new pieces as of yet.

Oh yah, I almost forgot! I adopted a cat! What's that? Wait! Yes, a cat. Well, she adopted me. Betcha didn't see that coming!!! She belonged to the new neighbors next door and apparently does not get along with their new dog. So, they gave her to me because she had been hanging out here all day and night, and is happy (well as happy as a cat can get). And now we are a pack of five.

Dire Warning or Good Example?

Today I am a dire warning. Definitely NOT a good example, well that is not necessarily true. Consider this post a friendly PSA (Public Service Announcement) to my canine loving friends in the North East and hey even in the Upper Mid West. Anyplace it is "deer country". Because deer ticks bring LYME disease.

Two of my three dogs have it. And they are really not in a high risk group at all! They only go out to"do their business". No lolling around the grass or running through the underbrush. They would much rather be on the sofa, snoozing peacefully, thank you very much. And I treat them with the oil based flea/tick control AND I even treat the lawn. So when the vet asked me during their annual wellness exams if I wanted a lyme test, naturally I said no. No need. Not at risk. I was glad I let her do the test eventually because I was so WRONG!!!

So both dogs are on antibiotics for a month. Lucky for me, the giving of the pills is not an issue. Then they will require more blood work (this is NOT a cheapo test, believe me) and then if the treatment works, a two part vaccine. OY. That is all I can say. More trips to the vet, more bills.

Lucy is the worst one because she is having significant lameness and her lab titer is MUCH higher. Hopefully they will be OK.

So do yourself a favor and get the vet to do a quickie test in the office for lyme and get the vaccine. You will save yourself $$ and some worrying! Thank you. PSA over and out.

That's the reason the posts have been so few and far between and mostly centered around nail polish. And there is one more "issue" that I might write about later...... an animal issue. LOL. And of course, China Glaze and OPI have released their Halloween Collections and as soon as I receive mine, I will post about those.

Hey, what about the knitting? And the jewelry? Ahem. Cough. Cough. Oh yah, that. Why I wrote this dang blog in the first place. I am sort of uninspired at the moment. I was working on helping a friend with a baby sweater (This thing was the most complicated teeny tiny sweater ever!) and just have not done much of anything. I have ordered some lucite beads in preparation for the holiday season, but nothing has come out of the studio yet. Those bead elves better get busy!!!

And one more excuse for good measure, who has gotten swept up in the "Hunger Games Trilogy" and the "Immortal Nicholas Flammel" series??? I just finished the Trilogy and am on third book fo the Nicholas Flammel series. LOVE!!!!

Ok, enough typing, time for supper!

Nail of the Week!

Just thought I would start off the week with an absolutely amazing manicure! And you know how I love blue and green nail color. This one is AMAZING. I wished the picture showed how pretty and downright sparkly (in a good way) this is in person. It is vibrant and just the thing for hopefully one of the last hot weeks of summer. I would just LOVE yarn in this color!

It is from Orly's new Cosmic FX collection. This is Halley's Comet. I love it!!! I ordered it online last week and was delighted when it came. I also secured "Galaxy Girl" (dark purple) and "It's Not Rocket Science"(GREEN!!). The colors were previewed on Scrangie a few weeks ago, and I knew I would have to order them. She does a WAY BETTER job at photoing them than I do.

Lots of crazy busyness happening around here....... I'll fill you in later. Hopefully I can post more frequently than I have been. It certainly has NOT been a summer of leisure.

The Perfect Green

What's on my nails this week??? The perfect green!!!

So here it is, the perfect green nail polish (varnish or enamel, depending on what you call it.) And sorry for the terrible picture, it has been raining cats and dogs here for the past few days! This is Nubar's Reclaim from the Going Green Collection. This was ordered a while back when they had a 20% off sale and I could not resist. My wonderful nail polish enabler (um, enthusiast) friend Jules suggested I try this brand. I am hooked. It's creamy and goes on well with good coverage. It's been on DAYS and there is nary a chip or dent. And yes, I do dishes!!!

I really need to snap another photo of this in the sun, as the hologram color in this one is so amazing. It looks different in every light. I bet this would look get on a pedicure!

Book Recommendation: The Hunger Games

I just read a great book over the weekend. It was perfect timing because I needed something to take my mind off things. This one was recommended by my friend Jules. Typically, I don't go in for young adult fiction, unless you count the Harry Potter series.

The book is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It was a well-written and intriguing story from the start. Original and just full of enough surprises to make it interesting. My librarian called it "disturbing, but good". My friend Jena's daughter who is voracious for books just finished it too. I will have to ask her what her thoughts are being she fits into the author's target audience.

There is much posted on the internet on this one, so I am not even going to give you a plot summary. It reminded me of "Lord of the Flies" meets "Survivor" only more inventive. Since it is a trilogy, I immediately requested the next book from the library, as well as the third one which is coming out next week! And yes, I saw in wikipedia that it has already been purchased by a studio.

Sorry I didn't give it more of a review. It's early and I have not had any coffee....yet and I need to get started on my day! It is going to be a busy one!

Nail of the Week!

So, recently I have developed a "wee" obsession with nail polish. Mostly this was fueled by my friend Jules, who is quite the makeup junkie. Thanks to her, I have been going BOLDER and BRIGHTER with the polish. Even daring to wear colors I never would before, like green and blue. Unfortunately I did not take a picture of my very fashionable and very funky blue manicure! No worries though, because I LOVE the color and have never gotten so many compliments on my nails in my life! So when I do them again, I will take a picture right away.

This weekend, in between movie watching, and reading (I will review it later as it is an intriguing book), and knitting on the Einstein sweater, I did a nail touch up. This color is called "Watermelon Rind". Perfect for the dog days of August although I will admit, it is NOT the color I expected. To me, it looks teal. On the nail it is green. Albeit a blueish green but not the teal I was expecting. I was doubtful if I really liked it, but the more I look at it, the more I like it. Definitely will be nice in the spring.

Oh I have so many posts in my head....swirling around and new stuff to add to the blog.... a new recipe...... crafty bits......and photos of my cool blue nails......but for now, you get a picture of an alpaca. :)

Yesterday my itouch crashed and with it, so did my world, apparently. Geez, I knew I relied on it quite a bit, but I guess I didn't realize just how much. So after a fit of swearing and tears (ask my friend Donna about the emails!!!), it is back up and running. Luckily my contacts, notes, date book and apps all popped back with little effort. The music however, is another story. So many playlists, so many songs, so many audiobooks and now, I am starting from scratch and reloading all of that. It's frustrating but it needed a good clean out/up from the stuff I listened to and am done with. There always has to be a positive, right?

My knitting has slowed to a mere standstill because I have been working with a friend who has mad skills, but picks poorly written baby sweater patterns and since the baby shower was last weekend and she is a tad under the gun, we have been rewriting the pattern and slowly knitting, row by row. Her doing the knitting and me cheering her on with the you can do this cheer. So my knitting is on hold....for the moment.

Ok, I have to dash...... Big Brother is on in a few minutes.........

Gillie's New Sweater

The other day it was a tad cooler here and the humidity was lower so I put Gillie's new green sweater on her and marched her out into the yard. She was not in the mood to have her picture taken, judging from this shot. Usually she is quite a ham.

I am brain dead and can't think of anything.

This project did not go as smoothly as I thought in the beginning. First off, this is the SECOND sweater. The first one was an EPIC FAIL. I made the size small AND I sewed the pieces together WRONG. I can't believe I actually am saying that. Which explains why the knit version I made her several years ago does not fit correctly. I was blaming the breed, as pugs are notoriously big chested. Apparently, it was because I cannot read a diagram. DUH.

I will say, now that I have two of these crocheted ones under my belt, I love the pattern. It's super quick (I think BOTH sweaters took me two days) and can be made with any yarn. This one is (gulp) super crunchy acrylic because it was the "test" to check fit and it needs to be washable and dryable. I refuse to hand wash a dog sweater. Does that make me a bad "dog mama"??

Muzzy looks a tad miffed that she does not get a sweater too.

Birthday Cake!

Today is my birthday, so I decided to celebrate with some cupcakes. Not that I need to eat anything more, I have lunch and or dinner plans practically every day this week, but still, it's nice to have some cake! I love vegan baking. Not that it is calorie free, but it is definitely less fat and much better for you than the traditional eggs, butter and milk cake.

I am sick of chocolate cake so I decided to peruse on of my favorite cookbooks, Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. I love this cookbook and know I have talked about it several times on this blog. Every morsel of cake that I have made from this has been devoured by vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Pumpkin Chocolate Chip cupcakes were the final decision. These are so amazingly good, it's not funny. I opted out of the cinnamon glaze that was suggested and went with a cream cheese (which does not make them vegan anymore) frosting with a little kiss of cinnamon on the top. YUMMY!!!

I definitely have an issue with copying a recipe from the cookbook word for word and posting it on my blog. I am sure if you google it, you will find it. But even better go buy the book. You will thank me later!

My little garden is starting to grow, but no ripe and ready to eat veggies as of yet. I just want all the tomatoes that are busting out on the vines to get red and ripen.NOW!!!

Sounds of Silence

Sorry for the silence this week. I have a nasty foot infection. I will spare you any photographs I have of it, because well you might be having a snack as you read this. Yah, it's that nasty.

So some high dose antibiotics and some pain meds and hopefully I will be good as new and be able to wear shoes next week! Let's hope so.

I am going to settle in for a very quiet weekend of knitting, reading and movie watching! Some books I had on hold came in at the library. And of course, more discs of True Blood from Netflix! Now if I can just find someone to bring me some take out Chinese food, it would be perfect!

On the knitting front, the Einstein continues and I still love it. I also have a plan to start a burnt orange Longhorn sweater for the dog! It's almost football season and we all need to get our burnt orange on!!!!

Random thoughts on a Friday

Because my wireless is giving me fits today, and it is too dang hot (yes, again) out to take pictures, I decided to post random thoughts for today.

:: I am in love with the Einstein Coat. I started it today while waiting for my car to be worked on and had even the men at the service department of Toyota interested in knitting.

:: I hate the heat. I wonder if I could find a neat place to live closer to the Arctic Circle?

:: My dicentra plant in the front garden has now taken on the appearance of being hit by a meteor. It is also yellow and fried looking. I need to trim it, but for the reason why I have not done so, see above. Despite the risk of heat stroke, this must be done this weekend.

:: Alot happens outside my office window. A fox kit just walked by. Seriously, a young fox most likely born this year. Where is my camera when I need it. And there are three baby robin in the nest as of today.

:: I keep forgetting to make a hair appointment and if I don't do it soon, well, it's gonna get ugly. And it is way too hot for hair.

:: I am completely hooked on Season 2 of True Blood. Hooked, or should I say bitten. Ha!

:: I am also hooked on anime now that my friend suggested I watch "Howl's Moving Castle". (Thank you Hanane) I have now put everything Hayao Miyazaki has done in my Netflix queue. (And thank you Jena for the recommendations of what to watch first!)

I am ready for my "Einstein" moment!

So the other day when my friend and I hauled it down to the local yarn shop armed with a handful of sweater patterns pirated from my yarn closet and some lofty ideas, she finally settled on the "Einstein Coat", and a wonderful chunky yarn from Berroco. Then she started it. I met her for lunch to check her progress and she is zooming right along. I taught her to pick up stitches and she was off on the second portion. Over the phone, I helped her with part three. And now, I have become so enamored with not only the yarn, but the pattern, I decided, oh heck, why not? Sure, I need hats and mittens for Winter, and those little items are so much better to knit in the blazing heat. Who really wants to sit with a big wool sweater on their lap in August? Well apparently me, because as soon as I hung up the phone with her, I promptly ordered the yarn.

This is NOT my coat, although I wish it was.

Perhaps you might be wondering about the pattern and the name. Well, it is from "The Knitting Experience Book 1: The Knit Stitch" by the wonderfully talented Sally Melville. It is called the Einstein Coat because you really feel like a genius knitting it, as it only involves two (count 'em TWO) small seams and bascially knit in one piece. And it is knit with a bulky yarn so it is quick, quick, quick!

Here is my color! Dried Plum. I love it. Not to mention it is a change from my usual "neutral palette". I can't wait to get started!

My Weekend in Stockholm

Bet you thought I went away for the weekend, huh?? No, I wish. Actually I spent much of yesterday taking care a sick pug. So while I was pug sitting, I was crocheting. The minute I saw this pattern I knew I had to make it. I dread sewing the squares together though, but the result is so fabulous, I will gladly overlook it.

This is the "original" afghan and the pattern is here. It was published to coincide with Debbie Stoller's new yarn line. (Which is wonderful, by the way) When I went to the store to by the yarn, unfortunately all the colors were not available at the time. So I went with acrylic that I could get all the right colors in. After all it is about the pattern and the colors, right?

These are some of my squares. I have about 8 more added to the pile after today and about 16 more to do. Then I need to go get the soft white yarn and begin the last row on each square and sew them together. I cannot wait to see the finished result. It really has been alot of fun crocheting again!

New Designs!

Some pictures for you! Here is my latest designs! With more to come...I am on a roll!

The two pair on the cards are birthday gifts. Yes, the seafoam colored ones are the same design as a few weeks back, but a different recipient. I just love that design and need to make a pair for myself. I have several colors of vintage lucite so if you would like to order a pair (for yourself or a gift) send me an email!!!

The "watermelon" ones are MINE. ALL MINE. And I am not sharing. I cannot tell you how simply amazing these beads are in person. They are from the torch of my friend Jena. She even has a set for sale here. FIVE different colors are used to make these HOLLOW beads and they are as light as a feather. I even have more which I plan on making a necklace with...soon.

When I saw these findings, they were labeled "hibiscus cut outs". OK, sure. I can see the hibiscus in there but my first thought was citrus slice. I have these tiny, itty bitty lampwork spacers in lime green so how could I not make "Limeade Earrings". Nothing says Summer like Limeade!

This is my latest houseguest. Another nesting robin. She is right outside my office window. I don't think the eggs are going to hatch because she has been sitting on them for far too long now. I feel so bad. She is so dedicated to them, sitting on them in the full sun in this heat and humidity. I can tell she is really hot because her beak is open and her feathers are all ruffled in an attempt to get some relief. I put out large shallow dishes of water for her so she can at least get something to drink and hopefully cool herself down. I will keep you posted of the progress of the nest! Hopefully there will be babies soon!

I'm off to find some lunch and work on some laundry.... have a nice weekend!

What to do, what to do? It's Friday and I finally have a day to myself. The ONLY thing on the list for today was to take the garbage up the street to deposit on the curb and it's DONE!!!! Ahhh...... I made myself a cup of coffee, returned emails and now, I am FREE. But what to do? Crochet, knit, read, do laundry (ugh),

Despite being a busy week, I have managed to get quite a bit done, but no photos so I will do that today, as soon as the light situation improves. . I have been on an earring kick this week and have made several pairs. And lots of crochet squares for a lovely afghan. I will admit, I am enjoying the crochet thing. I don't know if it is the bright colors, or the über crunchy acrylic yarn which reminds me of when I was a kid. Not to mention crochet is so quick, it is very satisfying.

The Happy Gardener

Well, it is as hot as a firecracker out there. No really. It is going to be over 100 today and they are issuing heat warning. You all know I how I feel about heat! I think I might spontaneously combust! Bring on Winter....please!

I got a TON of things accomplished over the weekend, but I have not taken pictures of anything....yet. I will. So today we will discuss my garden.

Here's my sweet little patio garden. I decided to do pots this year for several reasons. Number one being all my animal friends. I don't mind sharing but between the rabbit(s), chipmunks, squirrels and now a mole* (even though I know they don't eat the vegetables, but the tunnels make a mess), pots seem the safer option. Also, because the patio is right off the living room and kitchen, I will not forget to water them! And then there is the weed situation. I have not had to pull ONE weed in the pots!

So I have tomatoes (cherry and beefsteak), cucumbers, eggplant, and peppers (green and orange). There is also dill, sage, rosemary, oregano, basil (Thai and sweet) and one lone thyme plant that was saved from the dreaded "powdery mildew". And I am happy to say that there are buds and/or wee fruit on each and every plant!

I am also pleased with the meditation garden that I have been creating on the other side of the patio. I love sitting out there watching the hummingbirds in the morning while I have my coffee!

And I have finally decided what to do with the one remaining patch of garden that I have left. Well almost.... It is a toss up between a biblical garden or a medicine/witches garden. I have to do some research into what plantings are needed and then take a trip to the nursery to see what is available.

For today though, I am staying in the nice cool air conditioning.

* And yes, I have named the animals. there is no hope of my getting rid of them now. (grin)

Well, my shawl blocked nicely and I am pleased with it. If I had another skein of yarn, I definitely would have used it. Next time I will up the yardage for a bigger more cozy shawl. But this one is perfect for draping over my shoulders to ward off the chill of summer air conditioning.

Thanks girl. These are definitely what I needed to get the creative muse back! This weekend, I will be making more jewelry with the rest of the beads.....yes, there is MORE !

Way back, I bought these cute rhodium plated birds and they are just too cute. I made them into a cute pair of earrings that will match all my summer clothes!

So it has been humid as all get out here, and I am wilting, badly. Yesterday, the heat index was 104, and it is only June. It is going to be a long Summer if this keeps up. My AC is giving me tsuris (that's Yiddish for troubles or worries) this week, so hopefully the service man will have it up and running like a top soon. It is supposed to be a hot weekend! UGH! When is Fall???

Fiber Fun!

Well it was a busy, but fun weekend. On Saturday, my friend and I ventured to the yarn shop in search of a basic sweater pattern and yarn. She found a great yarn and a pattern so she was a happy camper. And I just could not walk into a yarn shop and NOT leave without a bag of fibery goodness.....right?

Here is my loot!

I picked up 2 skeins of Cascade 220 Superwash because it was 50% off and good for mittens and hats. The darker teal cotton yarn is for a "knock off" scarf idea I have. The nice and soft robin's egg blue yarn (Rowan Kid Classic) in the front was, I will admit, an impulse buy. The color is even more amazing in person. I have no idea what I will make with it, but it was too pretty to leave behind. And the blue and brown sock yarn is my first skein of Madeline Tosh and it is LOVELY. I have plans to make that into the Lacy Baktus. Hmmm, think I had a color theme going or what! LOL.

On Sunday I actually crafted and watched movies ALL DAY LONG!! ONE of the shawls is finished!!! And that includes weaving in the ends and blocking. It is "almost" dry and will take a picture of it tomorrow. I even made a bracelet for a friend's birthday. I just need to attach the clasp. She has extremely small wrists so I need to muck around with the sizing a bit more. AND I cleaned out my craft room/office closet. It was BAD. My thought is now that I can see where everything is, it might make me want to make more. We will see if that idea works....don't hold your breath!

This morning it dawned on me that July 4th is this coming weekend. EEK! Not that I have plans mind you, but time is really moving along. The year is half over!!!! Has anyone started Christmas shopping yet??? LOL, yes, I really did say that.

Fireflies at Night

Happy Friday! It's been a busy week and I have accomplished quite a bit. Meeting a friend for lunch at the Cheesecake Factory (YUM) and going to the LYS (that's Local Yarn Shop for you non knitters) to help another friend search for a new project for the Summer is what is on tap for the weekend. And then of course, there is grass cutting, weeding, and gardening to be done as well.

You all know I don't like the heat and it has been hot and muggy - OK, not as hot as say Central Texas - BUT anything over 70 is hot to me!!! So Summer is not my favorite season, but there is one thing I do love about it.....watching the fireflies at night. I love sitting in my living room and watching them flit across the yard. It's so soothing and peaceful. I wish I could get a picture of them, but every one just looks like a big black square so this one will have to do (courtesy of wikipedia).

Also spotted in the yard was a baby rabbit venturing out of the overgrowth for the first time yesterday. It was too cute! It was rolling around and chomping on some clover. Hopefully it will make another appearance soon so I can snap a picture. My camera is ready....sitting on my desk!

There are a million crafty ideas running through my head so I think I need a day long craft-a-thon soon!! But right now, I need another cup of coffee. Today's K Cup flavor is Timothy's Nicaraguan Fair Trade Organic. It's good!!!

NEW CLOGS!!!

Aren't these clogs AWESOME?? Ok, so they gave my budget a wee squeeze for the week, but they are yellow. And python print. And clogs. And super comfortable. How could I leave them in the store with all those factors staring me in the face? Seriously, I have always had a huge issue with shoes. Clogs always seem to be comfortable choice, and this pair was no exception. I even went for a long walk in my friend's neighborhood with them on and not a blister to be had! I am in love. Now I am eyeing another pair because they come in more animal prints. Zebra, and leopard, OH MY!!!!

I did lots of cooking over the weekend, spent some time with friends, and gardening. Now I am working on cleaning out the knitting basket. (A much harder task than it appears to be) I have finished a few things and made headway on some other, bigger projects. I even did some reading. All in all, despite the heat, it was nice and relaxing!

Well, it's Friday and all my chores are done. YAY!! The lawn is mowed, I have a clean house, NO laundry (!!), and food in the refrigerator! I am just about to go sit on the patio and enjoy the cooler temperature. It was brutally muggy today. I think I will tuck into some of my weekend projects!

The Never Ending Scarf Project!

Today I had hoped to share a picture of my latest "work in progress", but it is overcast and just about ready to rain any second. Oh look, it is pouring out now. So I will just tell you about it and take the picture later, because frankly, I am going to be working on this a LONG time.

Sometimes when I knit, I crave easy. As in "garter stitch" or the good ol' basic knit. Whatever you call it, it is squishy and soothing. Recently I ordered some Cascade 220 Superwash for Jimmy Bean's Wool. (Just an aside here. If you knit and need yarn, I highly recommend them. The shipping is like lightening.) My goal was the DAUNTING Dr. Who Scarf.

I love Dr. Who, always have. Even the new Doctor from this season is growing on me. Anyway, the scarf is from the older, campy, before special effects got good, version. Basically, it is just a striped scarf. I envision this striped squishy goodness wrapped around my neck with a multitude of Fall jackets.

There are some bad things about this project however. The original is OVER TEN FEET LONG. UM, yes, that is not a typo. A super long scarf plus me equal a trip to the ER in which the doctor has to leave the room because he cannot stop laughing over the fact I tripped on my scarf! Secondly, the colors. Yellow, no thank you. So I have made a few modifications. Shorter and in a more pleasing Fall palette.

I am really pleased with the color palette I chose (which I will get a picture of soon!) and hopefully it will be done by the Fall. Of 2010 that is!!!

Robin Pictures and a Finished Project!

I finally got around to uploading the last two days of robin images from my computer! Thanks for the emails about the birds. No, I did not use a zoom and they are basically not enhanced aside from some cropping. The nest was literally at waist height so it was just step into the pachysandra bed and snap the picture! I don't think they all made it to self sufficiency but I do see one of them gather worms and other bugs from the yard.

Day 11 - Not much room here. The apartment is mighty cramped!

Day 12 - And two are gone.... flown the coop!

Well, over the weekend I actually finished a knitting project AND made a pair of earrings. It has been way too long since I have created any jewelry and now the creativity bug has bit me!!! These are for a dear friend who has a birthday at the end of the week. I hope she likes them. (Excuse the dark pictures, it is overcast and rainy AGAIN!!) the dishcloths are for her as well.

Well, it's a rainy Sunday here. It's the kind of day that makes you want to curl up in your pajamas and watch movies. I have two good ones from my Netflix queue - Los Abrazos Rotos and The Young Victoria. There is also a book to be finished so I can post another Sunday Review, and a birthday gift for a dear friend to be completed and wrapped. Lots to accomplish and since it is nasty out, I don't feel compelled to be outside weeding the flower beds and dead heading the roses!

So I am going to tuck into some Tres Leches cake that a friend brought over yesterday - it's so good and I have not had it in ages - and make a pot of tea and pop in a movie. Enjoy your day!

Do You Get The "Gossip"??

Well, for those of you who know me, I hate gossip. It is destructive and mean and generally, I don't participate. I may read the occasional movie star gossip, but then again, I don't really believe much of what is said. But THIS GOSSIP is good. And I am talking about "Craft Gossip".

A few weeks ago, my dear friend Hanane forwarded me a daily (including weekends) newsletter she gets from Craft Gossip. Go ahead and sign up now, I know you want to!!! It is packed with crafty stuff, knitting, glass, sewing, cooking, and paper crafts. Somedays, there is nothing I want to make (there is LOTS of cute things for kids in here) and others, well, my bookmarks are piling up. Many people have such cute and informative blogs too. Oh, and there is also all natural DIY beauty remedies as well!!!

I am going to make this, and this, and this, and especially this!!!

I just got back from the local nursery with the remainder of the vegetable plants. And a new hummingbird feeder, some potting soil, and some other stuff I really didn't need. I know now what my weekend project will be!!!

I read. I read, alot. When I was little, my favorite summer days were spent in the backyard in the hammock under the tree reading. Ah, what I wouldn't give for a hammock right now.

Recently, I saw this book at Target. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. I decided to check the local library and see if they had it. Sure enough, they did (my library is fantastic), and I placed a hold for it. It came in last week and I sat down and read. Life got in the way and unfortunately I had to put it down, and pick it up, and put it down again, BUT I could have easily devoured it in one sitting.

Having come from a medical profession, I enjoy science, and combined with history, it seemed like the perfect way to kick off my summer reading. I assumed it would be dry, very dry, and technical, but not so. It was wonderfully written and meticulously researched. The book alternates between the life of Henrietta and the technical aspect of her "contribution" (which was done without her consent or knowledge so clearly that is the wrong term) to medical science. Her cells, taken from her when she was undergoing cancer treatments, have circled the globe, and have played a part in many of the current vaccines, drugs and treatments that we have today. They have been in space and blown up in an atom bomb. If you have ever taken a college biology class, chances are you have seen the HeLa cells, or at the very least read about them. But, have you ever thought about where the cells came from? Who was this person and what was their life like??? This book not only explores her extraordinary life, but the lives of her children and the immortal life of her cells.

In short, because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, I LOVED IT. It sparked outrage, tears, laughter, and many thoughts about the ethics and morals of medicine. I am definitely going to buy a copy of it for my "favorites" book shelf, and it is not too often I say that. Surely this book will stay with me for a long, long time.

Guests for Breakfast

So, I had a completely different post for today, and no it was not supposed to be bird pictures!!! But, I had an interesting visitor this morning and I could not resist. I was making a nice hot cup of coffee and a toasted sesame bagel (YUM) and I looked out my window and look at what I saw!

She did come with another hen (maybe her sister??), but it was hard to get a picture of her. Actually I was lucky to get the pictures I did, because turkeys move very fast! Who knew? I wonder if they were after all the pots of herbs I bought yesterday at the nursery?? Stay away from my Thai basil you two!!!

Hopefully the rain will stop soon and I get get all the herbs into pots today. If not, I can always move my potting adventures into the garage.

Good Morning!!! Well, it has been a LONG time, hasn't it?? Don't think I have neglected my poor little blog. I have been thinking about it and well, I think it is time for a revamp!!! I have some fun things to post and over the Summer, my goal is to post more, update the look of the blog and try to revive this thing. (And I know my friends will get on my case if I don't update in a timely manner!! LOL)

It has been a long Spring, filled with not so fun things. But they are done and I am FREE!!! I am glad it is Summer and this year I am going to take the next three months and fill it with as much fun and sunshine as I possibly can. Oh yes, I have a list!!! Lots of knitting and gardening, cross stitch and yes, JEWELRY DESIGN!!! I am so looking forward to it!!

So to start us off.... this tree in my front walkway held a very pleasant surprise!!!

Wow, did I get a surprise when I went for the hose. :)

So, I have been afforded a rare look into the nest because I didn't have

to stand precariously on a ladder to look in or use a zoom lens!

Well, so I had a brief blogging hiatus here. I had plans, oh how I had plans. I have recipes, photos, cookbook reviews, knitting to show y'all and then it happened. I will sum it up by saying I had La Grippe, because everything sounds better in French, no? :) The bug hit me, fast and furious and well frankly, I had no desire to blog about, talk about, look at it or cook food. Period. Knitting and crafting was out of the question. I just became a big nauseous lump.

And did make a few pieces of jewelry. It started out with a few pair of earrings for birthday gifts, and one pair for me to match a new sweater and then..... a bracelet. MINE, all mine....bwhahahahaha. (pictures to come as soon as the weather clears) And I will confess I have a new love....vintage lucite beads. I have been collecting them for some time now and now I need to put them to use.

No seriously, I am like the cobbler's children that do not have shoes. And that being said, I am dubbing March, the ME month. I am going to make myself some new accessories for spring!!!

Dog Day Afternoon

It's that time of year again.....time for the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. It is the second oldest sporting events in the country (with the Kentucky Derby being #1). Honestly, I miss going. It was something Mark and I did for YEARS and we had tons of fun! Sure the tv coverage is great, and the website has streaming video now (oh the miracles of modern technology), but being there is half the fun! Getting to see the dogs, talk to the breeders and owners, and people watch.....oh the people watching is exquisite!

And while I love my pugs, don't get me wrong...... I have SEVERAL favorite breeds. And yes, I have names picked out for each breed! I would own them if I had more room, or more hitch in my giddy up to get out there and exercise with them. LOL. Seriously, pugs are perfect for the sedentary.

This is one of my favorites. A Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen or the PBGV. Seriously it is one of the few words I can say in French, correctly. Well that and croissant. Helpful if you are in a bakery or a French dog show, but not essential for tooling around Paris. I would have one, but as a hound they like their voice, if you know what I mean, and I do really like my neighbors. Nothing makes neighbors into enemies like a howling animal.

The Longest Day!

Well so much for my nice snowy day. And thank you for not emailing me hate mail about the love of snow. I appreciate that. I was "hoping" to have all kinds of things to show you. I have been cooking and baking and in reality have practically gone vegan. Ok, I LOVE cheese and I don't know if I could safely say I will never eat it again...... and Greek yogurt, and it is very limiting if you want to dine out, but really I have had some terrific meals that I wanted to share. Today's lunch was an AMAZING Thai style salad...... which I will post here, once I can take a picture........

But the weather was a BUST. All that talk, school and business closing and nada. Just rain...although I think it is snowing now. And I spent the day with a paper shredder, files upon files of papers and several large mugs of hot coffee. Aside from

the cooking, not a crafty thing was done. And all I have to show for it is a headache to end all headaches. I am going to crawl into bed and rub some Badger Balm Headache Soother on and see if I can sleep.

I swiped this photo but I got the actual product at Whole Foods. It is wonderful.

I promise......recipes and knitting and a bunch of other stuff are coming......one of these days....... And thanks for still reading my little blog!!!

A Drive By Kind of Post

Sorry it has been a few days since I have posted. There has definitely been some good ol' vegan baking going on in this house, and some nifty vegetarian recipes have been sampled, too little knitting (Attention all February birthday friends - your presents will be late), and too little tax preparation (I am up to my eyeballs in paperwork here!!)

But tomorrow is a snow day!!! YAY!!! I honestly love snow (please don't send me any hate mail!). I don't mind shoveling (no really, do not send me hate mail!) Hopefully I will be able to accomplish all I need to, get the taxes to the accountant, optimize my photos so I can post my baking and finish up at least one of the presents. I have a great DVD series which I will post about later so hopefully, while the snow is blowing and drifting, I will be working.........

Knitting - The Tiny Things!

Here are some of the projects I was working on in January! The bigger things are not going to be posted for awhile since they are birthday gifts and I don't want to spoil the surprise!!! ;)

Pattern: Yorkshire Cowl for Lion Brand

Yarn: Hometown USA in Monterey Lime

Hook: Size P

I had been looking for a bulky cowl pattern I have liked for some time now. This was perfect! Easy pattern, it was done in about an hour. It would make a great gift! The yarn, even though it is acrylic is really NICE and it is soft!!! Lion Brand seems to have come a LONG way from the days of "fun fur"!! I think I might make a few of these for gifts!!

Pattern: Amigurumi Mouse and Door Hanger cat toys from Lion Brand

Yarn: Acrylic Scraps

Hook: Size G

One of my friends brought home a new kitty (Welcome Chloe) and I whipped these out in a few hours (it took me longer to put them together than to crochet them!). They were fun and I think I will make some more! I added a bell in the stuffing of each toy for some interest.

Pattern: Reusable Swiffer Cover from Sugar n Cream

Yarn: Lily Sugar n Cream in Chocolate

Needles: Size 7

Another easy project and environmentally friendly too.

I did make the top portions in plain ol garter stitch as opposedto the "pattern" for a bit of sturdiness!!!Happiness is a dog hair free floor and no more spending $$ on disposable cloths. This would make a cute shower gift along with a Swiffer!!

This is a MYSTERY PATTERN!!! Look for the finished photos soon and maybe a pattern!!!

A Lentil Recipe!

There are so many reasons to love lentils..... they are easy to cook, nutrious and CHEAP!!! (Or should I say frugal because cheap is such an ugly word??) They are really a staple in any vegetarian diet. I mostly use them in soup, but stumbled upon a recipe online and decided to try it. Well, it was OK, but could be better. So here is the "tweaked version". And IMHO, a better version.

Sure it's not the most attractive dish....but it is so YUMMY!!!

The Recipe:
Spicy Lentils

1 C green or brown lentils *
1/2 C chopped onion or a pepper and onion mix
1-2 TBS chopped garlic
1 can Rotel tomatoes and chilies (do NOT drain) **
2 wedges Laughing Cow Light Cheese - chopped ***
1 can of black beans (drained and rinsed WELL)

Cook lentils according to package directions (20-30 min) Drain and set aside.
Saute onions and peppers until slightly browned. Add garlic and cook additional minute.
Reduce heat.
Add Rotel and stir to combine, heat through. Add black beans and lentils, stir to combine.
Add Laughing Cow cheese and stir and melt in.

Serve over brown rice or sauteed spinach (or both) with a tossed salad.

Makes 4 one cup portions.

* Red lentils will not work here, they become too mushy.
** if the chiles are too spicy for you, add 1 can of reduced salt tomoatoes and season with reduced sodium taco seasoning.
***I prefer the Swiss flavor in recipes but it will work with any of the flavors.

..... I still have the fever!! The weather has become much more "seasonal" around here. (Read as COLD with a "touch" of snow!) I keep thinking of what I want to plant for herbs to grow in my sun room and searching for warmer temps.

As a sign of what is to come, I spied this out my office window yesterday!

And a friend brought me these the other day! Aren't they so lovely! I love this color combo.
It would sure make a pretty scarf or some beads (wink wink to all my bead making friends!!)
I smile every time I see the pretty flowers!

Spring Fever

Ok, here it is, January 26th and this is the second day it has been hovering around 60 degrees. Sure, if you live in the South (Howdy y'all!!), a sixty degree winter January day is normal. But here, not so much. The snow has all melted from the piles near my drive, the green grass is exposed and then it happened......

Spring fever. I found myself thinking about my gardens as I was wandering around the yard with the dogs. Ah Spring. Should I plant seeds or buy plants? And what about ornamental grasses? Oh and let's not forget bulbs.

But soon enough (like maybe this weekend), my green yard will once again be white and I will be contemplating wearing mittens but until then...I am enjoy the sunshine and thoughts of Spring (which is really right around the corner).

Well hello there! Yes, it has been awhile since I have posted and after several emails from friends, I decided that I should put something down here.

Let's see, I have been cooking!! Which is nice for a change so I will have some new recipes, and recipe reviews (the first review is here). Slowly I have been working my way through my latest cookbook, the Veganomicon. It's one of my favorites and right up there with the Moosewood Cookbook as vegetarian must have on your shelf. And no I am not cooking everything in it, in order ala Julie and Julia because seriously, who hasn't done something similar and frankly I don't like every ingredient in the book (for example: broccoli = blech!)!!

And I have been knitting, and crocheting. Well, LOTS more crocheting than knitting but nothing is exactly "finished" for me to take a picture of. Consider yourself warned. There will be a picture heavy knitting post happening very soon! ;)

The jewelry design is still all in my head and I have not sat down ant my bench to make anything new, but I am feeling like earrings are where it's at right now. Just waiting on a few more supplies to hit the mailbox and it should be all jewelry, all the time! And I have some sweet, lip smackin' Valentine's Day beads for a bracelet for ME!!! Which I would like to make BEFORE February but I think I might be able to get away with this one all year!

Now I better get moving..........

Hook Em Horns!

Sorry for the lack of posts this week. It has been one of those weeks in which nothing was planned but ended up being busier than I thought! I do have some pictures of last weekend's storm! They are still in my camera and hopefully I will upload them soon!

But tonight, I will be cheering on the UT Longhorns as they play for the BCS Championship. I will be up late and depending on the outcome of the game, I might be cranky tomorrow! So let's sing the fight song and send the team some good vibes so they win!

Let's Bake

I have really been missing cooking. Since the Summer, I have really slacked off in that department. It's OK, because it's just me and the dogs just eat kibble! But I was watching some British comedy DVDs and they were having a tea party and decided I should make a Victoria Sponge. My friend is coming over for a visit and thought this would be nice to serve with a pot of tea. Oh how civilized!

And yes, I really love British food. (Don't make that face) It's my "go to" comfort food. Always.

So what's a Victoria Sponge?? LOL. It's a light sponge cake with yummy jam sandwiched in between. Sometimes there is clotted cream too, but that's really fattening, but oh so good. It looks relatively easy from this recipe from the good ol ' BBC. Four ingredients. You really cannot go wrong.

If mine turns out good, I will take a picture!

Update: the sponge cake came out really well, although it needs a few modifications! But I loved it and my friend loved it and I would absolutely make it again! I'll add a picture of mine too!

Resolution No. 1

So, it's time for all those "end of the year" wrap up posts and tv shows. And let the New Year resolutions begin. I even noticed that on Christmas day, Kellogg was already touting their Special K diet. LOL. But seriously, I really dislike New Year's resolutions.

But I will admit, I have a New Year's resolution for 2010. One I hope to stick

to and I am going to report it on my blog, let's say once a month on how the progress is going. :) Talk about motivation! Mine is to USE UP YARN FROM MY STASH. Seriously, no new yarn starting January 1. NONE. (and I am well aware I have a few days to buy some! After all I said Jan 1!) I don't care how pretty it is, or how good a buy it is or (my favorite) because that brand/fiber NEVER goes on sale. My yarn closet has now become a closet and a bureau and we are not even going to discuss the x large ziploc tote of kitchen cotton in the front hall closet!

I think that's a good one. Don't you??? And now that my holiday knitting is done.....it's time for NEW projects!! I have two knitting and a crochet one in the works! This will be a piece of cake! And I can hear all my knitting friends laughing at me!

Well, I have finally finished my holiday knitting!!! **~~Yay~~**!! Please pardon the the pictures. Today were are having a few "unexpected" squalls so it's dark and randomly snowy. According to the weathermen it was supposed to be sunny! Yah right.

So without further ado.......

This was a fast easy knit. I am very pleased with how it turned out.
It is for my father who is a WWII vet so I thought it was appropriate!

This is hand's down my favorite cowl pattern. And yes, I really used crunchy acrylic
because the person who is receiving it loves the stuff. Now I need to make one in soft
wool for me!!!

Yarn: Gaslight Dyeworks DK in Victoria Falls
Needles: Size 6 circular
I love this pattern and the yarn. Gaslight Dyeworks is so soft and lush. It is beautiful dyed and the skeins are one of a kind....like the recipient!! I even found beads in my stash that matched perfectly so I made earrings as well!

So much prettier in person!

Now I can start some new projects!! I have not made a Thermis for myself yet..... and I have NO hats! Ok, I have ONE hat which I made last year. I think it is time I made a few, I think I am going to need them! And The girls need sweaters! :)

At First Light

That was an awesome snowstorm we had in the NorthEast. I am finally all dug out and raring to go this morning. I even managed to stay awake last night for the Survivor Samoa Finale! It was a great season!

This was my view early this morning from my living room. Naturally the photo just doesn't do the actual sight justice. The sky was so pretty with pink and purples. What a nice way to start the day!

So, here is another post about knitting. It's what I have been doing lately. Well that and drinking coffee. What crafter doesn't go out of her mind at this time of year? I swear NEXT year I am starting early. Yah, yah, right. And what crafter doesn't take that oath every year either. ;)

First, I will start with the box. I had purchased these boxes awhile ago thinking they would be the perfect size for a knitted gift. I cannot tell you how pretty these are in person. The are made with Italian paper and have just enough sparkle. A simple ribbon and you are done. This one has a lovely red ornament on it. If I can find more of these, I am going to get them.

This is the gift that was inside the box. It is for one of my good friends. She makes the most amazing biscuits and when I saw this pattern in my files, I knew I had to make it for her. I plan on making a few more of these to have on hand for quick gifts. They would make an awesome housewarming gift.....filled with biscuits. YUM.

Pattern: Biscuit Blanket (rav link)

Yarn: Peaches and Cream Cotton (no label for the color) I used about 1/3 of the cone.
Needles: Size 5
Notes: The pattern called for either a size 5 or 6 needles.
I opted for the smaller but next time I would definitely use the size 6 ones.

I also tried these cloths. My friend adores homemade cotton dishcloths so I thought they would be a nice addition to the box. These were so fun to make. The only issue I have is that you cannot really see the design. Sure, if you are holding them in you hand in the right light.....yes. But they were really hard to photograph. The designer has tips on her website, which I followed, including the blocking portion, but the photos just don't do them justice. I think once they are machine washed and dried a few times, the stitches forming the patterns will really POP!! There was a snowman, snowflake, hat, mitten, house and trees.

Needles: Size 3 (yes, really)
Notes: I would definitely make these again but put them in the washer before gifting.
She has some other great designs I want to try!

Monday, Monday

So today I was hoping to show off some of my Christmas/Holiday knitting. It's getting there people. Almost done. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have a great gift that is ready to be photographed but the sun is not cooperating today. Hopefully later I will be able to get something in the way of a photo. I really like how this gift turned out and I want you all to see!

Speaking of knitting, why is it when I have a deadline to meet, there are NEW patterns springing up like grass? Must restrain myself from starting anything new until I finish what needs to be done. Sitting up late in the night rushing to get a project done just ends in mistakes and tears. Ask me how I know this. But I really am in love with this sweater. Oh Knitty has done it to me again!! This issue is great and packed with my favorite things, lace, mittens and hats.

Ok, now back to my pumpkin spice coffee and pumpkin spice scone while I make a list of my knitting projects for the new year! YUM.

Branching out into color

This color combo is one of my new favorites. And aren't these penguin shaped plates so sweet?? (And in case you are wondering, they are from Target!)

I have been seeing this combo quite a bit these days, especially on etsy and on a kid's game which I have forgotten the name of!

So...I think this color combo might be perfect for my first big granny square blanket in the new year. It might have to be in crunchy acrylic too. (GULP!!) Unless I can find some affordable and washable wool. With three dogs in the house, those dry clean only blankets are NOT an option!!! There are some great other color ideas floating around in my head...although I think it would be better to finish up my holiday knitting first! :)

As the Winter season approaches, things around here start to get all grey, brown and black. No more color. Admittedly, I am a neutral color person. I wear mostly black, sometimes browns and the occasional navy blue (and that is going out on limb). My house is mostly neutral, aside from my office which is deep red. It's not that I am boring, or I don't like colors, no not at all. I just find the neutral palettes more soothing and flattering, if it is clothing. Does anyone remember a lovely Donna Karan suit that Barbara Streisand wore during one of her few television interviews? Head to toe in cream wool. It was lovely, and flattering. Enough said.

Well, during one of my blog lurking sessions aka early mornings at the computer, I stumbled across this blog......and then this one. (Go spend a few minutes, or hours, on these blogs, I am willing to bet you will find some great color inspiration!) Immediately I said "I must crochet". I must crochet now. And in bright colors no less. I love the items, fresh and fun. Whoever said granny squares are ugly and boring, look at this picture from one of my favorite blogs. Just lovely!

A creative use for leftovers.

When I am bored (ha ha!) or just killing time, I browse Etsy. I am continuously amazed by the creativity of some people. Like all things crafty, you have to weed through quite a bit of "bad crafts" who really give the term "homemade" a bad name, but sometimes you find little pearls of awesomeness. I consider this wreath one of them.

Now I don't know this person, but look at the creative use of yarn! Wow. I love this and think it is so pretty. I can seriously see it hanging on my sun porch all winter long!

Stress? What Stress??

This post should really be titled so much to do, so little time!!! The holiday stress has hit me, full force. Ok, not so much in the gift buying department (who really has the cash for big gifts this year??), but in the making of the gifts. Ok, a day (or two) in my studio and all of my jewelry gifts can be done but it's the knitting. No, really. That stuff takes time, regardless of how small. I know I can whip up a pair of Fetchings in a flash so people be getting those! I think I have the pattern memorized!

But today....I am nursing a headache of EPIC proportions!!! Nothing in my bag of tricks has worked so far. I am hoping (and praying) that it is not a sinus infection. UGH. I will phone the doc later today and get a supply of z-packs, just in case.

Do you think a cinnamon roll will help??? :)

Happy Cyber Monday!

Well, I don't know about you, but I am glad this very long weekend is over!!! So after too much food and too little exercise, I did get a few things done around here. And the biggest part is a I got a jump on my holiday knitting. OK, I guess it if it was August, it would be considered a "jump". Since December is tomorrow, it is just an OMG you have a deadline!!! :)

While the knitting needles were flying, I finished Season 1 of True Blood and cannot wait for Season 2 to come out on DVD. I also watched the ENTIRE first season on The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. And (ahem) I think I like it BETTER than True Blood. I only know of Jill Scott from her music and she has a wonderful voice, but she can really act! Every character is well portrayed and acted, good or bad. The scenery is beautiful too! I am hooked. It was sad to see the season end. I started reading the books and while they are all on my shelf, I think I only got up to the first four. The definitely deserve a re-read! Maybe I will get them on books on CD from the library so I can multitask!

Now if I can only find a large block of time to get into the studio and finish up the jewelry gifts that I need to! Hopefully this week! I ordered my Holiday cards and some new curtains for one of my rooms. Now who would like to come hang them and write out the cards??? There will be tea and cookies!

This is a gift for a friend for Christmas. What can I say about this pattern, it's easy, not boring and so darn cute! I will be making more of these. FYI Knitters....Dream in Color is fantastic in the worsted weight and is perfect for this. Definitely one of my favorite yarns.

Now the buttons are special. They were purchased in the garment district in NYC on my LAST trip there with Mark. ;( I miss the city, the district but not as much as I miss him.

The yarn has been in my stash waiting for something special and this was it. Not an exciting knit but very gratifying nonetheless. Simple garter stitch with increase and decreases. Oh my is this cute on!!! No, really cute. Have I said it is cute?? ;) I will be making more, and more of these. Perfect for the waiting rooms and marathon tv watching.

You can't tell from the picture just how pretty this color way is. LOVE.
I see a matching bracelet for this in my future. :)

Happy Monday! I hope everyone's football team did well over the weekend!

The knitting basket is "almost" empty"!!! I finished up two projects yesterday while I watched "True Blood". Love that show! I will get those finished (just a few buttons to sew) today. It feels so good to have an (almost) empty basket! Now I can start some new projects........ after I finish a lace shawl.........

Ok, I LOVE this. I plan on making more! Lots More! I found a stash of cotton in funky retro shades! Wouldn't these make nice housewarming gifts in a little basket with some nice kitchen soaps? Ok, I just have to say one thing....... the mitered portion is GREAT, but when you get to the yarn double, the cotton makes your hands HURT!!!

This was a test. I love the pattern, well written and it's just adorable....BUT.....it is HUGE. I don't think it has to do with the pattern, just the size hook (I must crochet at a loose tension) and the yarn. I plan on making more of these. Very funky!!! Every so often it is nice to throw some crochet into the mix.....talk about instant gratification!

This was for a friend who rearrange her entire day to take me into Boston for a test! My favorite pattern of all time and it was a joy to knit. A bit disappointed int he photos though because I could not capture just how pretty this was in person. She looked great in it too!

This was for my friend's little grandson who had the SWINE FLU at a month old. Poor little guy. He is doing much better now!
I am also unsatisfied with the top of his head. I cannot seem to get the written directions done as they should (even after many tries) so I just bound off purl wise. I will be making more so I'm sure i can figure something out!
* I think I would drop the needle size down on the head to a 5 or 6. He looks like he has a bit of hydrocephalus going on there. But he is still soft and snuggly!

Morning Visitors

Good Morning! Today I had deer in my yard!!! It's always a treat to see them and this time they let me get up fairly close. They even waited while I ran into the house and found my camera! (My apologies for the grainy images. It wasn't the best lighting in the area!) I was trying really hard not to scare them, and then I realized I had on my UT burnt orange sweatshirt and I could have possibly looked like a hunter!! LOL.

Must. Resist. The. Urge. To. Start. New. Projects.

Ok, I need to show some restraint. My knitting basket has multiplied and BOTH are overflowing with projects. I need to finish some, or all. But let's not get to ahead of myself and settle for some. Sure, finishing that baby gift would be sweet, before the child hits high school and will look mighty silly carrying a bunny blanket buddy! And the birthday gift........before it turns into NEXT year's gift!!! LOL. I have (ahem, I must take a bow) started on some holiday gifts (I KNOW...imagine that!) too, and my goal to give them THIS year!! :)

Now what I really want to do is start a dog sweater!!! Gillie (the black pug) has a single coat and gets very cold. Especially at night. I know this because she wakes me up to attempt to crawl under my covers with me. Three words here. Polar. Fleece. Sheets. ........ more on that later. But seriously, it is a bit odd to wake up with a pug in your face snorting at you!

And after I start the sweater, what I really want to do is CROSS STITCH!!! Yes, I said that. It is my nemisis. I like doing it....... for a short time.......before I want to poke my eyes out with tiny needles....... or I go blind from the small stitches. I have a corner in my dining room that is begging for a quad of seasonal samplers. I have the pattern, and about 800 pounds of floss. I think I will save this for a snowy weekend. Yah, that's it, I will wait for snow!

Happy Halloween!!!

I hope everyone gets lots of treats and no rocks in their sack this year! It's been a L-O-N-G week! I caught some cold (am I surprised after being so sick this summer???). I am just thankful I didn't get the H1N1 or the regular ol' seasonal flu.

Today I'm laying low and watching some college football (Go HORNS!!) and attempting to finish up my knitting projects that have seem to have gone haywire!!! NO MORE NEW PROJECTS until I finish up what I started...yah right!!!

Snow??? Well if I didn't know any better I would say it feels like we could get some snow. It's kind of grey and raw. Tomorrow is supposed to be rain....but we will see.

Obviously, if you tuned in the the New England Patriots game last Sunday, you saw we actually had snow. There is just something that is not right about snow BEFORE Halloween!!! I ended up watching some of the game (my friend Norma would be so PROUD!!) because I just could not believe it, after I double checked the channel and the teams! Not that I am a pro football fan at all, I prefer college ball..... and you know what team I root for!!! :) I am about 30 minutes east of the stadium, but not a flake was spotted here!!! Thank goodness!

A good book.

Since the other day was a bad book review, today I decided to post a good book review. Well good book series review. I have had the "Sookie Stackhouse Series" by Charlaine Harris on my shelves since they came out in paperback. Each time a new one was published, I bought it. And there they sat. HBO made the books into a television series and I thought I should read them before watching the show. (After all books are usually better than the movie, right??)

Well....... I love them. I flew through the first SEVEN quicker than lightening. I took a quick break for the James Patterson (big mistake), and now I am ready to get back to the wonderful world of vampires!!!

I won't go into an indepth review since I think I just might be the LAST person on the planet to read them. If you have not, I suggest you do. Sure, they will not win awards but they are very well written (in my opinion) and VERY entertaining. Good for vacations or snowy Sundays! I will definitely be delving into her other series.

Now I have the series in my Netflix queue. I can't wait!

A bad book.

Life is too short to read bad books!!! :)

Sometimes books are savored, like the new book by a favorite author or that one literary surprise that you picked up on vacation. Sometimes you just want a cozy mystery (which are my new obsession) or a cheesy romance. Sometimes you get a clunker of a book. Usually I will plod along and finish, even though it may take a week or more. And sometimes, books started must just be put down, shelved or returned from where they came from.

"The Murder of King Tut" by James Patterson is just that type of book. I will admit he is not my favorite author, but I love Egyptology and thought, well why not? After all, how bad could it be? It was a rainy Sunday and just perfect for curling up with a book. I wished I had read the reviews on Amazon.com prior to attempting this. Billed as non fiction, I expected something with some research or scholarly study. No. I would call this fiction,based LOOSELY on fact. The key word is LOOSELY. Finding myself rolling my eyes with each passing page, I decided to put this one down for good. An event that rarely happens in my house!

If you are looking for something good on Egypt and fictionalized, I highly recommend Naguib Mahfouz. There is a reason he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. His work is entertaining and definitely well researched.

But the best part about "The Murder of King Tut" was the fact I got it from the library! So now I can return it, never having it collect dust on my shelves!!! And that is a good thing!

Ok, I gave in, I turned on the heat yesterday!!! I really like to hold out on this (until at least the 31st) but damn, it's chilly!!! And there has been a mention of that dreaded word....S.N.O.W. Yes I really did say that, although I think the forecasters like to get everyone all panic stricken!!!

My guest arrives tomorrow and it really isn't nice to make them freeze now, is it?? Especially when they will become a taste tester for some new recipes/cookbooks (reviews will come soon!). So they will be eating maybe(?) questionable food and freezing their butts off??? Makes you really want to come be a guest in my house, huh?? :)

Hi Everyone!

Well, don't get so excited....I'm not back to blogging just yet! I am feeling slightly better BUT I am still playing catch up here AND I am having a house guest arrive in just over a week....so I have been cleaning and organizing (mostly the yarn stash as I have been told it is going to be raided!!). Now if I could just find someone to come and weed and edge the garden beds. Anyone have a teenager (my neighborhood is mostly devoid of children) who needs to make a buck??? Not to mention those holidays that are finally over!! For another year, at least!

So that being said, I will be back shortly with knitting pictures, pug pictures, jewelry pictures and hopefully some fun stories!!!

I also want to change the format of this blog as well, maybe adding some vegetarian/vegan recipes? Anyone up for that?

Issues???

Apparently, there has been some "issues" with this blog in my absence. If you have troubles logging in and seeing the site, PLEASE do not take it personal. OK??? I didn't know it was happening and I "think" I have fixed it now. I will be back in September with all the knitting projects I have been doing, and other stuff too.

The garden this year has been a complete bust due to the weather and I have ONE lone green tomato sitting on it. I should get a picture of it soon, before it gets ruined by the rain!! There has not even been any raspberries....nothing.

(Update: 10/09...... the one lone tomato became THREE! So I had three yummy pieces of fruit that grew despite the fact the plant was sadly neglected! I can't wait for next year!)

Sorry it has been so long since I have posted. Due to a serious illness, I will be taking a blog vacation, or should I say "blogcation" until the end of August and I get back on my feet again. For those of you "in the know", I am home and feeling better each day, although the progress is slow. (hey after all I am getting older..... HA!!)

Well, sorry for the silence here the past week. I was out with a "stomach ailment", and no it was NOT the "Swine Flu". :) Now I am playing "catch up" with everything, including the blog. Not much jewelry design of late, aside from the earrings I made using my best friend Jena's new lampwork series, "Cabana Boy"!!! See the earrings and beautiful beads here. Unfortunately, her bead collection has SOLD OUT, but I could be persuaded (I suppose) to sell the earrings. Email me if you are interested!

Cake or WHAT??????

Remember the "super secret" project I was working on last week??? Well I finished it. And here it is.

OK, before you go "HUH??" and think I completely lost my marbles, I will explain. A few years ago, (when the book first came out) I fell in LOVE with Subversive Cross Stitch. I like the fact they are sassy and say what you really think, and the fact that the nasties are adorned with sweet bunnies and flowers make it just right! But I have a love/hate relationship with cross stitch. After stitching a 50th Wedding Anniversary sampler for my parents, I wanted to poke my eyes out with the little tiny needles and VOWED I would not ever do cross stitch again....... until I saw this book.

So, they have a Flickr group which led me to thinking, I could do other sayings, ones not in the book and ones I would not have to take down when I have company that might be offended. Yes, I know it is MY house but still........

I have a metric ton of sayings and they are quick enough to complete to just keep me interested and no fancy stitches!!!

So, this saying??? What does it mean?? You mean you DON'T KNOW the comedian Eddie Izzard?? You should. Really. This man is funny. Really funny. He has been in a few movies and TV shows here in the States, but you NEED to see his stand up. That is some good stuff!
